Rosemary plant can easily survive in dry soil, you might wonder and it needs the entire soil to feel dry between the time you water it. But how often should I water potted rosemary?

You should water your potted rosemary plant once weekly in summer and once every two weeks in fall and spring. It would be best if you water rosemary by soaking it, as soaking lets the water drain out from under the pot.

In this guide, you will learn everything you need to know about watering potted rosemary plant and how to care for it.

How Often Should I Water Potted Rosemary?

You don't need to water rosemary through cold seasons like winter. Those are states where potted rosemary is dormant, and if you keep watering them, there are higher chances of growing roots that would end up rotten.

Appropriately draining your soil is quite essential when you do not want to have rotten roots.

The rate you water potted rosemary depends on the conditions of your yard or garden and the climate.

It is a known fact that rosemary adapts to growing in the European Mediterranean area. In these areas, your potted rosemary enjoys growing under the sun at well-drained soils with rainfall that isn't frequent.

To cope correctly with the full sun of the Mediterranean region, which has occasional rainfall, these rosemary plants have leaves that look like thin needles, which reduces the rate at which water transpires (is lost) from the plant.

Rosemary plants are appropriately adapted to grow in dry environments. These are why they suffer from overwatering, which changes their color to brown or black and end up causing rotten roots.

If you want to grow your potted rosemary at home, you should try to copy the conditions present in the Mediterranean region. This includes watering the plant once weekly or once during two weeks in fall or spring.

How Much Water Does Potted Rosemary Need?

How Often Should I Water Potted Rosemary

You should know that the way the potting soil for your rosemary plant dries is entirely different according to various factors. Some of the factors that affects how often to water potted rosemary include:

Material and Size of Pot

Little pots always dry out faster than large pots. Plastic or metal pots heat up faster under the sun when compared to ceramic or clay pots.

If you plant your rosemary using a pot, a garden, or maybe a bed, the raised bed and pots have excellent conditions for drainage for rosemary.

Located in an open space

You could plant your potted rosemary in an open space. Planting it there in the presence of so much wind could dry out the soil faster and take out a lot of moisture from your leaves.

Temperature and Humidity of the weather and climate conditions

Your soil's capacity ability to hold moisture is quite essential. Rosemary needs soil that holds moisture properly to reduce the rate of getting rotten roots.

Though your rosemary is potted, it enjoys some breezy and airy conditions because it these natural growth conditions. You should also know that potted rosemary could dry out faster in areas that are windy consistently.

Watering your potted rosemary poses a higher risk than under watering your plants. It would help if you were on the path of having dry soil than having damp soil.

If you plant your rosemary inside a pot, you could feel your potting soil using the holes meant for drainage.

If you have damp soil, you could reduce the rate of watering for some days. If your soil feels quite dry, now is the time for you to water your plant.

After knowing the rate your potting soil dries, it will help you know the amount of water you should use to water your potted rosemary.

Conclusion

When wondering ' how often you should water rosemary plants,' bear in mind that there are climate seasons when you shouldn't overwater potted rosemary. These conditions include winter. All through winter, your rosemary plant is dormant.

The chances of the plant suffering from rotten roots are relatively high. Your rosemary plant keeps all of the moisture obtained from your environment through winter. So it would be best if you watered it once a week in summer and once in two weeks in fall and spring.
