Who Makes Toro Mowers?

Toro mowers are manufactured by Toro Motor Company, a US-based company with distribution centers in El Paso in Texas, Windom and Shakopee in Minnesota, Plymouth in Wisconsin, El Cajon in California, and Sanford in Florida.

Let's go back in time a little bit. Toro Motor Company was founded in 1914 to make tractor engines for The Bull Tractor Company.

Toro entered the push mower market by acquiring Whirlwind Corp. in 1948. For many years, they marketed push mowers under this brand until 1952 when the Whirlwind Co. Windowm Mn. factory was closed down.

Toro's Chairman, David Lilly, and President, Al Conover, identified the need for Toro to become a full-line lawn and garden producer in 1970.

Toro established itself as a genuine leader in the outdoor consumer product market thanks to strong follow-up and additional enhancement by Toro's in-house product development engineering group and highly savvy marketing efforts and decisions.

Toro purchased American Motors Corporation's Wheel Horse Products Division in 1986. Wheel Horse produced lawn and garden tractors, as well as riding lawnmowers.

The division was spun out from AMC for $8 million for the carmaker to remain focused on automobiles. Toro benefited from its understanding of the outdoor power products market, and purchasing Wheel Horse returned Toro to the riding mower business.

In later years, you will discover that Toro purchased Lawn-Boy from Outboard Marine Corporation in 1989, James Hardie Irrigation in 1996, Exmark Manufacturing in 1997, Rain Master Irrigation Systems in 2005, and in 2007, Turf Guard Wireless Monitoring Technology.

In 2007, MTD Products was contracted to manufacture low-end lawn and garden tractor products for Home Depot shops, and in the same year, Toro withdrew its Wheel Horse versions.
